An animal skin rug is a great feature for any home. It adds warmth while remaining durable and easy to maintain. We have many sizes available and can make the animal of your choice into a rug as well. Our rugs are usually from twenty to fifty square feet in area. The best part about having an animal skin rug is that it will maintain the markings of the animal from which it was made. Major leather producing countries will often sell the hides of cows from the meat and dairy industry.
How Are They Made?
Hides that are selected to make rugs from are usually chosen for their unique patterning. It is also important that the hide is still intact. The hides are then cured to make sure that the fur does not fall out and any odors will be eliminated. The first stage of creating an animal skin rug is the curing process. This involves a washing and salting the hides over the course of about two weeks. The next stage is the tanning stage. There are two kinds of tanning and if you are having your rug custom made, you will get to choose between either vegetable tanning or chrome tanning. Vegetable tanning is much better for the environment although chrome tanning is a much faster process.
The leather industry is not a stand-alone industry. In fact, the leather industry is a by product of the meat and dairy industry. If the leather industry was not involved, then there would a be a huge environmental pollution. Cowhide comes from an animal which has already been slaughtered and is therefore not an inhumane industry. The way that the animals are treated depends on the laws within the different countries where the leather comes from. As far as the hides of other animals go, if they are legally hunted then it was harvested humanely after the animal was already dead.
Under the Rug
If you place one of these rugs on the carpet it is likely to slide or bunch due to movement. Cowhide rugs will work best on a hardwood or concrete floor. Reducing the movement of the rug can be achieved by adding a self-adhesive foam underlay. There are also spray backings to create a non-slip environment. If you place your rug over glossy tiles, then it is at risk for moving and could be a safety hazard.
Leather is a material that is known for being extremely durable material. A rug made from the skin of an animal is likely to outlast any other rug in your home. This makes them an excellent choice for high traffic areas in addition to display areas.
