Creative and attractive mounts are what we at Boise Taxidermist do the best. Especially when it comes to decorative pieces that involve animal antlers and horns. Taking a small trophy from your last hunt or making a mount from some found horns is a one of a kind way to decorate your home and honor animal wildlife. The process that we take in order to create these mounts is simple and traditional. This means that it is a time tested and popular option that is used for antlers and horns by the taxidermy industry across the board. You can trust our trained and qualified taxidermists to provide you with a quality, one of a kind pieces that meets your needs decoratively and displays the animal parts respectfully.
Molds for Antlers
A mold is created just for mounting horns and antlers. These molds come in all sizes so that the proper size can be chosen for your particular set of antlers or horns. A portion of the mold is then cut in order to accommodate the bone that connects the antlers or horns together. The mold should be cut so that the bone slides in perfectly and fits snugly. This will be held together by mache, but it is important that the foundation is set so that the mount lasts a long period of time. Holes are then drilled into the skull so that screws can be placed into the molding block. We take care to use the proper equipment so that the screws do not stick out the back. This is important for safety, but also so that the mount can be placed flush against a surface.
Mache is then mixed and smoothed across the area where the skull was inserted into the mold. This mache serves as an adhesive of sorts to keep the skull and antlers or horns inside the mold. This mache should be allowed an adequate amount of time to dry and should be mixed properly. Our taxidermists are aware of the proper ways to mix the mache so that it is not too thick or too thin and is able to dry and remain secure.
Using felt or animal skin, your choice, measurements will be taken so that the mold can be adequately covered while leaving space for the antlers or horns to protrude. Braids or other decorative elements can be added around the antlers for decoration and to make them stand out. Depending on your taste, there are several design options and colors that are available.
The mold is then added to a wooden mount of your choice so that it can be applied to the wall and enjoyed for years to come.
